During my January Term of last year, I took the Sustainable Community. We spent a lot of time learning about the poor and unethical decisions that were being made in our world in the past. We got to see real-life examples of organizations and individuals trying to make the ethical decision, and spread their beliefs to others. We got to visit Dittmer recycling, where they process thousands of pounds of recyclables in a solar-powered recycling plant. We also visited the garbage dump in Dubuque, who is reducing garbage and its admissions by a controlled burning that gives off less methane. These are just two instances of groups that have changed the way they operate in an attempt to better the world. By having us visit, they showed how they are trying to educate the younger crowd so we grow into this type of life. Dubuque as a whole is one of the leading cities in the country in terms of sustainability. The picture to the left and above are logos seen more and more in Dubuque as they keep spreading the word. That was the goal of the class, and it worked for me. I learned life lessons about making the right decisions, and what happens when you make unethical decisions and how it effects more than just yourself. Below are two links from some of my favorite parts of the class.
Above is our final paper for the Sustainable Community. It shows the ethical decision-making process in Dubuque that has recently been re-vamped with the Sustainable Dubuque project. The paper also entails the field trips we took and how the class changed the way I think and act.

This video was another part of our final project. In it, our group shows how Loras is trying to do sustainable activities. It also shows those around the community are trying to make a difference as well. The video is very informative, but we also had a lot of fun doing it and let our personalities really stand out. I feel this is a big part of ethical decision-making because we were making the ethical decision to get out and inform the community, also trying to band together with those already involved.
